We all know about urban legends, those stories that grow out of fear, or out of the need for parents to protect their kids from scary houses. Youtube is no different. Below are 5 YouTube urban legends that have been circulating since the 2000s. Most of these have disturbing background stories, so be prepared for your fair share of demons, eye pulling and screaming.

1.Channel 666

The number ‘6’ is commonly linked with the devil and so the legend of Youtube channel 666 was born. The legend is that in early 2008 a channel was born that contained highly disturbing videos. In order to find the channel, one had to type in 666 into Youtube. Nothing would happen until you refreshed the page a few time. Virtual blood is said to stream down the page and all the text turns to 666. While this may sound like the creepiest aspect, it is said that the videos on this page contained violent images of drowning women and babies. The channel also contained a virus which would lock down the operating system of computers, making it impossible to move away from the page.

2. Barbie .avi

This is one for the strange books. At the end of 2009, a video was uploaded onto Youtube entitled ‘Barbie.avi’ . The one-hour video showed a woman talking about her skin. She seems to become more and more emotional as the video goes on. The theory around this video is that the woman suffered from a rare disorder which makes her want to cut off her limbs. In the video, it becomes clearer that she has one arm. What makes this video so disturbing is that the audio is very muffled but her concern about wanting to 'take her skin off' makes it creepy. Some legends suggest that she wanted to replace her skin with plastic in order to be a real life Barbie doll.

3. KarlMayer

KarlMayer is the username of a person who uploaded a video which is linked to the creation of paranoia. The video which was uploaded in 2008 contained disturbing shrieking noises paired with strange images of flowers and morphed images. The video, which has been taken down numerous times but re-uploaded, is said to be full of subliminal messages linked to suicide. Having watched a portion of the video, I can say that it is not for the faint of heart.

4. Mereana Mordegard Glesgav

2008 seems to be the year of the scary Youtube videos. Merena Mordegard Glesgav was the name of a channel containing a hypnotic video that caused people to supposedly pull out their eyes. The video shows an animated man with a blank expression on his face. As the film progresses he starts to smile and his eyes roll around in his face. This is accompanied by the sound of bells and demonic laughter in the background. The legend says that over 150 people pulled out their eyes after watching the video and that a Youtube content reviewer committed suicide a day after watching the scary video.

5. Suicide Mouse

Last on our list we have what seems to be an innocent video uploaded in 2010. The video entitled ‘ Suicide Mouse’ shows Mikey Mouse walking past houses on loop. The video is distorted and blackened to give it an airy nature.  The video has been linked to suicide in teenagers and even brings with it the story of a security guard who shot himself while watching the video. There is very little wording,  expect for a garbled Russian voice at the end that says something about ' Bring the young to hell"
