Publicity machine Arnold Schwarzenegger is having the time of his life on the press tour for Terminator Genisys. From Snap Chats, Vine videos to waxwork pranks, Arnie has thrown himself into his promotional duties with admirable gusto.
While on the official Terminator junket, Arnie was asked about the status of the third Conan movie and the big guy gave a few intriguing details about the potential story.
“I was hoping to do another one, and I [liked] the idea of Conan having been king for a long time, then just threw it all away and went into retirement and went off into the mountains. That whole idea always appealed to me. Then of course he gets asked back because of some hideous and unbelievable things that are happening to the kingdom. So that’s when the battle begins again.”
Chris Morgan (Fast and Furious) worked on an earlier draft of the script although Andrea Berloff (World Trade Centre) is now heading up subsequent rewrites. Schwarzenegger revealed that the script is still in need of some work and praised the “extraordinary job” the writers have done.
“It needs some tweakage but really they’ve done an extraordinary job with it, very thoughtful so I’m looking forward to working with them on that as soon as this gets out of the way, because I’m very focused on one thing at a time. Then we do the next thing.”
Since returning to acting, Schwarzenegger has yet to have a hit movie outside of The Expendables ensemble. The Last Stand was a heap of fun but sank without a trace, a team-up with Stallone led to the forgettable Escape Plan and Sabotage was a hot mess. Proving that ageing action stars can learn new tricks, Schwarzenegger tries his hand a bit of honest to God acting in zombie drama Maggie. The combination of Schwarzenegger and zombie may conjure images of an all-out action extravaganza, but it’s a low-key think piece examining the bonds of family.
The early reviews for Terminator Genisys have been decidedly mixed; some critics have labelled the movie ‘dull’ and others are endorsing it as the best in the franchise since Judgement Day. Ultimately, all any Terminator sequel/reboot can hope for is to be considered better that Rise of the Machines and Salvation as James Cameron already made the definitive Terminator sequel.
There's no current release date planned for Legend of Conan, but Terminator Genisys arrives in the US on July 1st and hits the UK on July 2nd.
