Things are certainly picking up as we near Christmas. First up this week is Kingsman: The Golden Circle. A new enemy has surfaced. Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore) has had the Kingsman headquarters destroyed and now she is targeting every drug user on the planet with a tainted new drug product. Now Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) must travel to the USA and team up with their American equivalents, The Statesman, to stop Adams before she kills off half the Earth?s population.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was a big surprise back in 2014 and this well deserved sequel keeps the quality up, takes the story into even more outrageous places, and delivers a wickedly fun action movie with spectacular set pieces, great performances and lots of laughs. And Julianne Moore is deliciously evil as the new villain. We even get the return of Harry Hart (Colin Firth) and the brilliant additions of Statesman members Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Champ (Jeff Bridges), and a gut busting small role by none other than Elton John. Superior fun to be had by all with Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Next up is the new Kathryn Bigelow film, Detroit. Based on true events, Detroit tells the story of a police raid in Detroit in 1967 during one of the largest race riots in US history. The event took place at the Algiers Motel on July 25, 1967 when a group of white police officers interrogated, tortured, beat and killed several people staying at the motel including seven black men and two white women.

Detroit is a hard watch, but a clear sign that not much has changed in the past 50 years. John Boyega plays a security guard who witnessed much of the goings on that night, and Will Poulter brilliantly plays the lead officer chillingly well. The man is an unhinged monster and the events of that night are hard to comprehend. But the film sheds light on events such as this of which similar ones are still occurring today. This is a must see film, but is not for the weak of heart. Bigelow delivers another stunning, powerful and thought provoking film in Detroit.

Lastly this week is the latest Netflix Marvel show to hit Blu-ray, Luke Cage: The Complete First Season. Mike Colter stars as Luke Cage, a former convict who, due to a sabotaged experiment, has super strength and impenetrable skin. Now a fugitive, Cage keeps a low profile working and living in Harlem. But when crime starts to take over his town, Cage is pulled into using his abilities to help those who can?t help themselves, becoming an icon of hope for the inhabitants of Harlem.

Luke Cage: The Complete First Season is another brilliant series from the powerhouse duo of Netflix and Marvel. The third series produced after Daredevil and Jessica Jones (in which Cage was introduced), Cage has a much different feel and really brings a new perspective to the Marvel TV universe. Colter is absolutely perfectly cast as Cage bringing strength and heroism but also a real sense of sadness and compassion as well. The supporting cast is totally kick ass including Theo Rossi, Simone Missick, Alfre Woodard, Rosario Dawson and the genius of Mahershala Ali. If you have been digging the Netflix Marvel universe, Luke Cage: The Complete First Season is bound to become a new favorite.

Also of note this week is the new comedy The Trip to Spain starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season, and the new Criterion Collection edition of Election starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick.

Until next week movie lovers.
