Well here we are with another tiny release week in March! Let’s kick it off with Songbird. The year is 2024 and the COVID pandemic has been going on for years and has gotten significantly worse through mutations. People have to do temperature check ins through their phones and anyone infected is taken from their homes and places in quarantine camps. Nico (KJ Apa) is an immune bike courier who finds out his virtual girlfriend Sara (Sofia Carson) is showing symptoms and will be picked up soon. Nico decides to ask one of his wealthy clients to help him secure an immunity bracelet to get to Sara and save her from being taken, but it will take a lot of work to put all the pieces in place to save Sara in time.
Songbird is the first film I know of that actually addresses the current pandemic. It is pretty freaky watching what could be a potential future, and a scary one at that. Riverdale’s KJ Apa is a solid lead here as is Carson, and writer/director Adam Mason creates a believable dystopian future that really does feel authentic and relatable to our current world situation. Songbird is an apocalyptic tale, a love story and a cautionary tale well worth checking out.
Also of note this week is the new take of the classic Roald Dahl story The Witches starring Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, Titans: The Complete Second Season and the new thriller Rent-A-Pal starring Wil Wheaton.
