Another packed week of releases as most of us begin the arduous task of buying Christmas gifts. Fear not, something for everyone this week. These are your new releases for November 11, 2014.
First up this week is the final season for one of the most popular shows HBO has ever produced, True Blood. Based on the popular series of novels by Charlaine Harris, we have followed the exploits of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) for 7 years now. I hesitate to reveal plot points for those who have yet to delve into this final season but there are tons of revelations, some new relationships and some cruel fates in store as the vampire virus ravages the vampire community. Friendships are tested and no one is safe as even the immortality of the vamps is no longer a guarantee.
True Blood has always been full of rich and varying characters as is the trademark of creator Alan Ball. This last season really seems to shift away from the comedy and action of the past couple seasons a little and concentrate on the inner workings of the shows main characters. It seems a fitting way to end such a great show as we really get to dig deep into the characters we love before we have to say goodbye to them. A fitting end and a series that will be remembered.
Next up is a 80s classic, of course from Shout Factory, UHF. Hot on the heels of Weird Al’s first number 1 selling album this year, UHF celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a beautiful new Blu-ray. Al plays George Newman, a man who is given control of TV station Channel 62 by his uncle who won it gambling. With the station on the verge of bankruptcy, George miraculously transforms it into a successful station by programming a bizarre schedule of TV shows with his crew of misfits.
UHF is so much fun it’s ridiculous. On paper it seems like a film that shouldn’t work but Weird Al’s gift for parody and comedy makes this film a gold mine of laughs. And it introduced the world to Michael Richards who went on to TV fame as Kramer on Seinfeld. Shout Factory’s Blu-ray boasts an impressive new transfer and a nice bevy of special features sure to please fans. UHF is comedy gold.
Lastly this week is another 80s Shout release, Dolls. I seem to cover an awful lot of Shout Factory titles in this column but I’ll be damned if they don’t release more gems than any studio. Once a staple of VHS rental shelves everywhere, Dolls has gone on to become quite the cult favorite. The story follows a group of travellers who end up at an old mansion owned by a seemingly kind older couple who are dollmakers. They are fascinated at first by the couple’s talents but soon find out there is much more to the house full of dolls than they could have possibly known and they must find a way to survive the night or suffer an unimaginable fate.
Dolls is so atmospheric and fun. Directed by horror master Stuart Gordon, who also directed the 80s classics Re-Animator and From Beyond as well as the underrated and brilliant Edmond, Dolls is full of jumps and thrills from the get go with some very cool makeup and effects work. Stuart keeps the mood creepy but so much fun, Dolls is an overlooked gem that really deserves this Blu-ray treatment.
A couple other gems to keep an eye out for this week include the new Melissa McCarthy flick Tammy, the Lamberto Bava horror classics Demons 1 & 2 on Blu-ray, the phenomenal and maybe better than the first How to Train Your Dragon 2, Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys and the hilarious Let’s Be Cops. So much to choose from this week!
Until next week movie lovers.
