Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World had a huge uptake at the box office thanks to The Avengers, both sequels outgrossed their predecessors by a healthy margin and now Captain America is benefiting from the Avengers effect. The Winter Solider got off to a strong start last week in the UK and other key territories ahead of its US release, pulling in an estimated $96.2 million in its first three days.
Captain America: The First Avenger opened in 2011 to a modest $65 million in the US for its first weekend, not a bad start at all and this was easily on par with the opening for the first Thor. Overall Cap’ first mission ranked as the lowest grossing phase one movie with just short of $380 million in ticket sales. Strong reviews from critics and positive word of mouth have done The Winter Solider the world of good, at the time of writing the smash hit sequel has made over $303 million worldwide and it is set to eclipse the final tally of the first film by the weekend.
Next up in the Marvel cinematic universe is perhaps their biggest gamble so far, Guardians of the Galaxy launches into cinemas on August 1st and a new extended trailer is coming our way very soon.
Captain America: The Winter Solider is out now.
