Without ever having seen a single bit of footage of Naomi Watts in the coveted role of Princess Diana, people have been talking up her Oscar chances like it was already the middle of February, 2014. Well, three months removed from the UK premiere of the eponymous biopic, the first teaser trailer for Diana has now been unveiled. Although it gives us a slightly closer look at Watts in action, the one-minute teaser is really just a visual mood piece whose only apparent purpose is to stir up nostalgia and make us cry. Of course, such dependence on heartstring-tugging isn’t necessarily problematic; let’s just hope it’s not a sign of masking deficiency.

Focusing on the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, this controversial film directed by Olivier Hirschbiegel (Downfall) will centre on the respective relationships between the titular princess and Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and Dodi Fayed (Cas Anvar). Will this be the role that finally lands Naomi Watts an Academy Award? Only seven and a half months in time will tell…
