The X-Files 20th Anniversary Panel at this year’s Comic Con was greeted with a huge applause and sparked fresh rumours of a third movie. Creator of the show Chris Carter has added more fuel to the fire in a recent interview with Empire:
“It's really up to 20th Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonization date has passed and that is something we wouldn't ignore.”
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprised their roles in the 2008 sequel ‘I Want To Believe’, after a decade gap between the first movie and six years since the series finale, the film didn’t fare well with critics or at the box office. Released in 1998 The X-Files made an impressive $189 million worldwide, ten years on the sequel only managed $67 million and fans were annoyed that unanswered questions from the series weren’t addressed.
In the interview with Empire Chris Carter went on to explain that the potential third film would go back to the roots of the TV show;
"For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology."
A new movie is far from a done deal, but in this crowdfunding age and an ever loyal fanbase there are plenty of options for filmmakers if conventional financing methods aren’t possible. We’ll bring you more on this as soon as we hear something.
