Could Christopher Nolan Be Directing Bond 25?

Ordinary, I'm not one to dip into the murky waters of speculation, but like a siren's call, this rumour is too enticing to ignore. One eagle-eyed film fan recently noticed that the IMDB Pro page for Bond 25 listed Christopher Nolan's production company Syncopy amongst its preliminary credits. While that doesn't mean Nolan will direct the next James Bond movie, it does at least support the theory that Nolan could be involved in some capacity.

Before we continue to speculate, let's have a quick recap of the facts. Bond is currently without a home since the deal with Sony expired after the release of Spectre in 2015. While they're still in the mix, Sony is facing stiff competition from Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and 20th Century Fox who have all been pitching to rights holders MGM and EoN. Unlike the Sony deal that spanned four films, only a single movie is on the table as any further sequels will be negotiated on a film by film basis.

After The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and his forthcoming World War II epic Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan has a long a fruitful history with Warner Bros. Could the involvement of Syncopy suggest that Warner Bros has emerged as the victor? Maybe.

Sherlock director Paul McGuigan has also been linked to Bond 25, and I prefer the idea of Nolan serving as a producer/writer opposed to directing a Bond movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm intrigued to see how this pans out, but Nolan is a filmmaker who strives to make original motion pictures, and that's where he thrives. Then again, I never would have though Sam Mendes would helm one Bond film let alone two. So we'll have to see how this develops.

Daniel Craig has remained open to the idea of returning for one final Bond adventure, and producer Barbara Broccoli recently commented that she had "just about persuaded Daniel Craig to do one more Bond movie." Should Craig opt to don the tuxedo one last time, it would certainly explain why MGM and EoN are only seeking a deal for one movie.

Dunkirk is released in UK cinemas on July 21.
