The Netflix and Marvel TV partnership continues to disintegrate at a rapid pace as Daredevil won't be returning for a fourth season. Following the surprise cancellation of Luke Cage, and the surprise to nobody cancellation of Iron Fist, the curtain has fallen on Netflix's first Marvel series after three uncompromising seasons.

In a statement from Netflix released via Deadline, the streaming service gave no specifics about why the show was ending in a typically vague fashion.

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season, and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and an incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years.

While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel."

There have been lots of talks that the Netflix arm of the MCU will be revived on Disney's no longer untitled streaming platform (Disney Plus) when it launches next year. Netflix's final comments suggest that we haven't seen the last of the devil of Hell's Kitchen. However, Marvel overlord Kevin Feige isn't a huge fan of Netflix's Marvel shows, add to that the adult themes, violence, and naughty words, and Daredevil doesn't fit within the current Disney/Marvel model. It is also worth noting that "the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel", isn't the same as continuing the iteration that Netflix started.

At this stage, it's too soon to know what Disney has planned for Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. They may well want the characters to use in a future Phase of the cinematic universe, or give them a rest before rebooting a TV series on Disney Plus. I think it is safe to assume that the forthcoming third season of Jessica Jones will be the final run bringing the Marvel/Netflix partnership to a conclusion. Could a fan mounted petition to revive Daredevil be on the horizon?
