Director Michelle MacLaren will no longer helm Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman as the filmmaker has departed the project. In a swiftly released statement, Warner Bros have only cited the vague and generic “creative differences” as the cause of MacLaren’s exit.
"Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.”
Michelle MacLaren has directed the heck out of episodes of Game of Thrones, Braking Bad, The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, an accomplished CV by all accounts. There has been an ongoing lack of female directors on superhero movies, and MacLaren’s situation echoes what happened to Patty Jenkins on Thor 2 a couple of years ago. Jenkins (Boy Don’ Cry) was all signed up and ready to take on The Dark World, the ‘creative differences’ reared its ugly head, and Jenkins left the movie.
Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) will make her long-awaited big screen debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Zack Snyder helmed sequel will also feature appearances from Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Ben Affleck’s Batman goes up against Superman (Henry Cavill) on March 26, 2016, and we should be due a trailer before the summer is out. The standalone Wonder Woman movie is currently set for release on June 23, 2017 so that should give Warner Bros ample time to find a new director. I won’t try to mask my disappointment that MacLaren is out of the mix, but the show must go on and we can only hope that the next director has better luck.
