Following the success of Coming 2 America, Eddie Murphy has signed an exclusive first-look and three-picture deal with Amazon Studios. According to Deadline, the deal extends to Murphy developing projects for Amazon that he may potentially star in or produce. 

Initially, Coming 2 America was all set for a theatrical release, but the pandemic threw a spanner in the works, which led to inevitable delays. Just like most other studios, Paramount sold off some of its high-profile movies to Amazon (and other streaming platforms). The belated sequel has become one of Amazon's biggest hits, with more than 1.2 million complete views in its first week.

Speaking about the deal, Amazon's Jennifer Salke had this to say;

“Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family.”

After several years out of the spotlight, Murphy returned to films with the brilliant Dolemite is My Name which landed on Netflix in late 2019. Any reminder that audiences needed that Eddie Murphy was still a force of nature was answered, firing on all cylinders in an R-rated movie, Dolemite Is My Name was a remarkable return to form for Murphy. Except for Dreamgirls (which garnered him an Oscar nomination), Murphy spent far too many years wasting his talents in generic kids movies like Daddy Day Camp, Meet Dave, 1000 Words, and The Adventures of Pluto Nash. 

To promote Dolemite, Eddie Murphy returned to the show that made him a star and hosted Saturday Night Live, and there are still plans for a Stand Up special for Netflix. The streaming giant will also be the home to the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop 4, which currently has Bad Boys For Life's Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah attached to direct.
