Pitch Perfect 2 managed to fend off Mad Max: Fury Road to the number one spot at the US box office, those loveable pitches took more than $70 million in its opening weekend. To put that in perspective, the first Pitch Perfect hit cinemas in 2012 with a modest opening of $14.8 million for a domestic total of $65 million. Pitch Perfect 2 has eclipsed the entire haul of its predecessor in just three days.

In a new interview with Collider, director/producer and co-star Elizabeth Banks discussed the possibility of Pitch Perfect 3.

"I will say, it would be disingenuous to say that no one's talking about a Pitch Perfect 3; the possibility of it. We are really focused on getting as many butts in seats for this one. If fans embrace it, we are going to seriously think about what the continuing journey would look like, but we don't know what that is yet.

I guess I really love the story of legacy in this one, I knew I wanted the riff-off to look pretty much exactly what the riff-off looks like in this movie and I knew what the finale looked like, so I had some connection points into the story that really jazzed me up, and I don't know what the story of the third one is yet. So I can't say... but I'm excited to delve in and figure it out.”

Pitch Perfect was a solid hit in 2012, but it found a huge audience on DVD and boy did that fanbase turn out in force for the sequel. As an added benefit, the critical response has been nothing but good so we can expect that official Pitch Perfect 3 announcement any day now.
