A couple of months on from the announcement that Warner Bros' Fantastic Beasts 3 would be delayed from its November 2020release, we now have confirmation of when the sequel will arrive. If you were hoping the delay would be a short one, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you or rather Warner Bros' Ron Sanders does.

“J.K. Rowling created an awe-inspiring universe that has captivated people of all ages, taking us on an extraordinary magical journey.  Warner Bros. is so proud to be the cinematic home of the Wizarding World and is excited about the future of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.  We look forward to bringing the third chapter of the five-film series to audiences around the globe in November 2021.”

That's right; Fantastic Beasts 3 has been pushed by a whole year to give the filmmakers the time they need to make a worthy middle installment in this five-part prequel franchise. Last year's Crimes of Grindelwald didn't have the impact that the studio expected following the success of the first film. Generating $653 million worldwide, Grindelwald made $160 million less than its predecessor. Any way to chose to look at it that spells trouble for a valuable property for Warner Bros. Perhaps one of the most significant issues with the sequel was it spent too long setting up the future, and not enough time on giving fans a compelling standalone story.

Warner Bros hit pause of the DCEU to course correct, and it has paid off with both Aquaman and Shazam delivering satisfying standalone movies in a wider universe. Naturally, the Wizarding World is a slightly different proposition, but the Crimes of Grindelwald felt episodic rather than cinematic. Rowling's lovingly crafted world has boundless potential, so hopefully, the extra time will aid in getting the franchise back on track.

Fantastic Beasts 3 will arrive in cinemas November 2021. Meanwhile, the extended edition of The Crime of Grindelwald is out now on Blu-ray.
