In a move that will surprise nobody it almost ceases to be news, the third and final adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent saga (Allegiant) will be split into two movies. In a recent statement from Lionsgate co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger they revealed why this story could only be told in two parts.
“The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we’re tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise.”
Roughly translated as “this will make lots more money” this method has become quickly seen as a cynical ploy to eek out a franchise. Most of us are fine with that but occasionally it would be nice for the Hollywood bosses to just be honest about it. Divergent topped the box office three weeks ago and has amassed over $139 million worldwide, this might seem unimpressive compared to Hunger Games but Divergent has many more countries to open in before the end of its run.
Red and RIPD director Robert Schwentke is all signed up to helm both Insurgent and Allegiant so it is a safe bet he’ll be staying to complete part two of the finale. Unlike other YA adaptations that are split into two parts, both parts of Allegiant will be shot as indivudial productions opposed to lengthly back-to-back filming. Allegiant Part 2 will be released March 24, 2017.
Divergent is out now in cinemas.
