When it comes to anthology TV shows, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have cornered the market with three separate dramas all currently on the air. American Horror Story will return later this year for its sixth rotation, American Crime Story kicks off in February on FX and Scream Queens has just been handed a second season order from Fox.
The horror comedy centred on a series of murders that plague a campus sorority, starring the likes of Emma Roberts, Lea Michele and Jamie Lee Curtis the show started strong but struggled to maintain the audience share set by the pilot. Ordinarily, dwindling ratings would put any TV show in danger of cancellation, but Scream Queens drew huge numbers on VOD that more than tripled its live watch audience. On demand services are becoming more important to networks as audiences change the way they engage with TV shows.
Season two will relocate from a campus setting to a hospital “where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation.” According to Deadline, Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts and Lea Michele will be back, yet it remains unclear if they will be portraying new characters or reprising their original roles.
Scream Queens was a genuine surprise and delivered a dark comedy that was a hoot to watch from start to finish. Murphy, Falchuk and Ian Brennan created a meta horror comedy for the social media generation; this is what the Scream TV series should have been instead of the bland shocker MTV made.
Scream Queens will return to Fox later this year
