Fresh Off The Boat will be joining Modern Family, How To Get Away With Murder, and Agents of SHIELD as ABC TV shows that will be ending in 2020. Based on the book by Eddie Huang and created by Nahnatchka Khan, Fresh Off The Boat will end with its currently airing sixth season. Launching on ABC back in 2015 and was the first Asian-American led Network sitcom in more than two decades. Starring Randall Park and Constance Wu, the 90s set sitcom will conclude with a two-part finale early in the new year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision the end the show came from the producers who wanted the opportunity to bring the series to a natural end. The news doesn't come as a complete shock owing to steadily declining ratings, and Constance Wu's response to the sixth season renewal wasn't overly positive. Wu voiced her upset on Twitter over having to drop out of a film project owing to the last-minute renewal of Fresh Off The Boat. Following the success of Crazy Rich Asians and this year's Hustlers, Wu has forged a successful movie career and is very much in demand. The Hollywood Reporter also notes that all the casts' contracts were up at the end of season six, and ABC wanted to make room in the schedule for new shows.

In a statement confirming the show was coming to an end, ABC's Karey Burke had this to say;

“We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape. The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry. Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and centre, something that hadn’t been done in two decades. The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons,”

Series creator Nahnatchka Khan added;

“I’m so proud of the show and what we’ve accomplished over the past six seasons. Thank you to everyone at ABC and 20th Century Fox Television for going on this ride with us. It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told. Like B.I.G. said, ‘And if you don’t know, now you know."
