Guillermo del Toro Working On Pacific Rim 2 Script

Although the sequel has yet to be officially given the go-ahead. writer/director Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Travis Beacham are already hard at work writing the sequel.

Pacific Rim didn’t perform as well as expected domestically, making just over $100 million during its theatrical run a sequel based on those numbers looked unlikely. However, the worldwide box office told a very different story by adding over $300 million to the domestic tally. Still, $400 million for a movie that cost $190 million (before a dime has been spent on marketing) leaves a medium sized question mark over the future of the franchise.

Launching an original movie that isn’t a sequel, remake or based on a comic book/video game/app/viral video or a meme is becoming increasingly difficult. Pacific Rim might have had its flaws but I found it to be a great (albeit silly) action movie that did exactly what it said on the tin. No more, no less.

Charlie Hunnam starred as Raleigh Becket in Pacific Rim so given his new found availability after dropping out of Fifty Shade of Grey, perhaps a return trip in a Jaeger could be on the cards.

Ultimately the DVD and Blu Ray sales will help determine if Pacific Rim 2 goes into production, at this stage del Toro has no updates as to when a sequel might get made but what he is sure on is; "The decision to greenlight or not, that's definitely above my pay rate."
