CBS has called time on Halle Berry’s first TV series and won’t be bringing Extant back for a third season. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Extant was the story of an astronaut (Berry) who returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission mysteriously pregnant.
The pilot episode attracted solid ratings and was a huge hit on Amazon Prime, but the series struggled to maintain the consistent audience that CBS were expecting. The network did something strange, they shifted away from sci-fi and made it more of an action series. If that wasn’t alarming in itself, most of the original supporting cast were swiftly written out, and dangling plot threads got ignored entirely. Despite the soft reboot the ratings didn’t improve throughout the second season, in fact, they hit new lows by the time the finale was broadcast last month.
In a statement from CBS’ President of Entertainment Glenn Geller, he extended his thanks to Halle Berry, and they are already planning their next collaboration.
“CBS, Halle Berry, and the producers have decided to conclude the Extant story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant played an important role in expanding CBS’ lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”
Halle Berry added;
“I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant,” said Berry. “This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly’s journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there. It was my first foray into episodic television, and I’m excited to continue my relationship with CBS, producing more compelling stories through my 606 Films production banner.”
According to Variety, the new series CBS and Berry are working on is a courtroom drama called Legalese from The Good Wife producer Steven Lichtman.
