Insurgent Leads US Box Office

The second movie in The Divergent Series has topped the US box office on its first weekend, Insurgent debuted with $52.2 million but didn’t quite have what it takes to outperform the previous instalment.

This time last year, Divergent launched with an opening of $54.6 million in the US, this puts Insurgent only mildly behind its predecessor, but the franchise is showing big growth at the international box office. Divergent clocked in a solid $137 million outside of the US over the course of its release; Insurgent is already off to a strong start with more than $47 million taken on its first overseas weekend. The sci-fi sequel has received mostly negative reviews from critics, but bad reviews didn’t do The Twilight Saga any box office harm.

Disney’s Cinderella slipped one place to number two, the live-action take on the classic tale banked a further $34.4 million for a running US total of $122 million after less than two weeks. Cinderella cast her spell around the worldwide box office as well with $131 million collected so far. The Kenneth Branagh directed film is on track to end up with a Maleficent sized global total ($758.4 million) by the end of its theatrical run.

Sean Penn’s debut in the action genre didn’t make much of an impression on the charts, The Gunman is from the director of Taken and came in fourth with an opening weekend of $5 million. Since Taken scored a huge hit back in 2008, it spawned a new sub-genre dubbed geriatric action, paving the way for the likes of The Expendables, The November Man and 3 Days To Kill. The poor performance of The Gunman is almost half the opening that was predicted by the studio the week before its release.

As we’re are on the subject of geriatric action movies, Liam Neeson’s Run All Night on its second week fared better than The Gunman. Thanks to a strong $18 million opening in China, Neeson’s final entry in the Taken franchise passed the $300 million worldwide total. Taken 3 may have fallen short of expectation domestically, but internationally the sequel is outperforming Taken 2. I’m still not convinced that Taken 4 is off the table just yet.
