The cast of American Horror Story: Freakshow descended onto Paleyfest over the weekend. Jessica Lange was amongst the stars on stage, and the legendary actress broke the hearts of all of the AHS fans by confirming what we all feared. Jessica Lange will not be participating in the forthcoming fifth season of the horror anthology series.
“Yes, I’m done. We’ve had a great run here. I mean, I absolutely love doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I love the writers and Ryan (Murphy) and the insanity of shooting it.”
Last month Lady Gaga announced she was joining the cast of the fifth season, the tentatively titled American Horror Story: Hotel will be the first time Jessica Lange has not been the star of the show. On a personal note, I had hoped that Lange could be convinced to stick around for another year or at least drop in for a guest spot. Truth be told, I’m still holding out for the latter as Lange has been icing on the AHS cake and has served up four powerhouse performances. The series just won’t be the same without her.
Towards the end of the AHS panel two casting additions for the fifth season were announced, Cheyenne Jackson (Love Is Strange) has been cast in an unspecified role but will be in all 13 episodes. Fresh from his brief guest role on Freak Show, Matt Bomer (Magic Mike) will take up a full-time residency in the horror story Hotel. There’s no word yet on if Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be returning; Paulson is amongst the cast of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story, and Peters has his plate full with X-Men: Apocalypse. Neither Paulson or Peters confirmed or denied their potential involvement in the forthcoming season, but their schedules might make it difficult to make an appearance. Rumour has it that Kathy Bates will be back following her roles in both Coven and Freak Show; fingers crossed the producers can woe both Bates and Angela Bassett to return.
American Horror Story: Hotel is due to go into production over the summer and will debut on FX late October.
