Danny Boyle returns to the horror genre with 28 Years Later, the first chapter in a new trilogy that takes us back to the nightmarish world 28 Days Later, created over 20 years ago. The original 2002 low-budget horror painted a stark picture of London in the aftermath of a virus (named Rage) that turns people into mindless flesh-eating infected. Ordinarily, I would say zombie. We all know what a zombie is, but Boyle was never a fan of labelling the infected of 28 Days Later as zombies.

The sequel has now assembled a powerhouse cast, including Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), and the esteemed Ralph Fiennes (The Menu). More casting announcements are expected soon, as production is due to start in a matter of months.

Plot details remain under wraps, but presumably, 28 years after the initial Rage outbreak, the virus has now spread well beyond the borders of France, which was teased at the end of 28 Weeks Later. Excitingly, Deadline reports that the new film is a direct sequel to the original, sparking speculation about the potential return of Cillian Murphy. While Murphy is involved as an Executive Producer, whether he'll reprise his role remains unanswered for now. The newly minted Oscar winner will soon be stepping back into the shoes of Tommy Shelby for the long-awaited Peaky Blinders movie. The big-screen continuation of the award-winning series will start filming in September and promises to be worth the wait.

Boyle will direct the first film in the trilogy from a script by 28 Days Later writer (and Civil War director) Alex Garland, but Boyle won't be at the helm for all three movies. Nia DaCosta (The Marvels, Candyman) is in talks to direct the second instalment, and presumably, a third (as-yet-unknown) filmmaker will close out the new trilogy.
