When Kevin Feige was promoted to Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer just a couple of months ago, it was a clear indication of significant change to come. True to form, change happened swiftly, the Ghost Rider series was dropped, The Runaways got axed, and only a few weeks ago, Marvel Television was disbanded. That spelt uncertainty for the recently announced live-action Helstorm series and a quartet of animated shows including Howard The Duck from Jay and Silent Bob creator Kevin Smith.
While there were no announcements over the future of the proposed Hulu animated shows Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey and team-up event series The Offenders, Kevin Smith has offered an update. Speaking on his Fatman Beyond Podcast, Smith revealed that the show is still alive as far as he is aware,
“Now, Marvel TV won’t cease to exist; it’s just becoming this different version, I hear the Hulu shows are still alive. So far, so good for Howard the Duck. I’ll let you know if anything happens.”
Howard The Duck has the privilege of being the second-ever Marvel-based creation to be given the big-screen treatment. Executive produced by George Lucas, Howard The Duck was a box office disaster upon its release back in 1986. The critically mauled film has since developed a cult following, but the damage was done and we wouldn't see Howard on the big screen again for nearly 30 years. The character was officially ushered into the MCU during the post-credits scenes in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014 voiced by Seth Green. Howard was glimpsed again in Vol 2, and eagle-eyed fans spotted him during the epic finale battle in Endgame.
It remains unclear when Howard The Duck will arrive on Hulu, but Smith has developed a taste for animated storytelling. He's currently working on a He-Man anime series for Netflix that will pick up where the original animated series ended.
