Another British Comedy Horror crash lands but at least this isn't Elfie Hopkins!
In the dead end seaside town of Rainmouth, Jamie (Ed Speleers) finds himself stuck running his pothead mother's bed and breakfast for the entire summer. His summer starts to look a touch brighter when he meets a smart and sexy American going by the name of Juliana (Jessica Szchr) but not long after her arrival, strange things start to happen and the local teens start to go missing one by one. Jamie is warned by a mysterious stranger and werewolf hunter (Timothy Spall) that there's a werewolf vacationing in Rainmouth and it's preying on the young tender flesh of virgins. The only solution is to get laid as swiftly as possible.
Ah British horror, sometimes we can whack out some truly intense titles like The Descent or Triangle but other times we end up flogging a dead horse like Elfie Hopkins and believe me, you'll be begging to flog Elfie if you're forced to sit through that mess.
Here we have Love Bite, Love Bite which stars pretty boy Ed Speleers, Brit acting veteran Timothy Spall and American Beauty from Gossip Girl, Jessica Szchr. Some would say this is a poor mans Lost Boys or Once Bitten but they were both vampire flicks so this one is totally different... or is it? Once Bitten sees a vampire queen comes to a local town seeking virgin blood and in order to get this vampire off his tail he must get laid. Lost Boys involves a dying sea side town and kids going missing.and merge those two flicks together, throw in a hot girl and a werewolf and taaaaaa daaaa Love Bite.
Although Love Bite can be funny at times and Ed Speleers does get his kit off along with Szchr, it really does need a lot more work. When Szchr goes down on a banana things just get silly and although the plot may shed some light on the act in question, it really does take away from her ballsy persona as a woman in horror. I love women in horror whether they be good or bad but come on at least have a little respect for them.
The characters here are a touch silly; the usual teen fools that pollute UK films but at least this isn't a film that plays on horror convention too much. Relying on rules to steer the content, instead the characters are driven by their urges. They boys driven by the need to copulate and Szchr's character sits firmly out of Speleers reach but for what reason?
The only good thing I liked about this film was the fact that losing your virginity wasn't a must do. Speleers character was actually slightly old fashioned in the way he wanted to take his time and get to know someone before jamming it in and wigglin round. It was actually a nice sentiment which is usually missing from the sex laden dramas of today including Gossip Girl.
Love Bite isn't outstanding but it's not bad either but it is nothing special. It's certainly a step in the right direction for Director Andy De Emmony and writers Ronan Blaney and Cris Cole. Had they just spent a little more time going over the smaller issues, then Love Bite might have been something more than it was but as it stands it's better than Lesbian Vampire Killers but that's not really a stretch to be fair.
