The creative team behind Netflix's latest horror hit series, Midnight Mass, are turning to The Master of the Macabre for a new limited series. Mike Flanagan has scored an eight-episode order for his Edgar Allan Poe-inspired series, The Fall of the House of Usher. According to Deadline, the series isn't a direct adaptation of the Poe short story of the same name, but the project is believed to be based on multiple works of the legendary Edgar Allan Poe.
Created by Mike Flanagan, the limited series will see Flanagan sharing directing duties with his long-term cinematographer Michael Fimognari with each of them directing four episodes. Over the last decade, Flanagan has curated an impressive portfolio of horror with Hush, Oculus, Before I Wake, Quijia Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game, and the mighty Doctor Sleep. Then in 2018, his startling take on Shirley Jackson's classic book The Haunting of Hill House gave us one of the best horror drama shows of all time. Well, that was until his decade long quest to make Midnight Mass was realised; if you're a fan of character-driven slow burn horror with a flawless cast, Midnight Mass should be your new TV obsession.
Showing no signs of slowing down, Flanagan already has his next Netflix horror series in post-production. Based on the works of Christopher Pike, The Midnight Club completed filming last month and is set for launch on Netflix sometime next year. The limited series recently released its first synopsis to us a taste of what to expect.
"A group of seven close terminally ill young adults resides in the Rotterdam Home hospice run by an enigmatic doctor. They meet at midnight every night to tell each other scary stories. One night they make a pact that the first one to succumb to their disease is responsible for communicating with the others beyond the grave. After one of them dies, bizarre occurrences begin."
The MIdnight Club will feature Flanagan regulars Zach Gilford, and Samantha Sloyan, with horror legend Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street) taking a rare central role as the enigmatic doctor that runs the hospice.
Midnight Mass is available to stream on Netflix.
