Multiple Dexter Spin-Offs Are Coming To Showtime

Showtime is in the early stages of developing a full-fledged Dexter universe following the success of last year's revival, New Blood. After ending the show back in 2013, most fans of Dexter were a little miffed that the finale was, let's be diplomatic and say, not good.

Thankfully, original showrunner Clyde Phillips returned for New Blood and promised fans a better finale for Dexter, and (for the most part) New Blood delivered on that promise. It also did what a good revival should do and left the door open for a spin-off. Showtime has already given a straight-to-series order for a direct continuation of New Blood, with Dexter's son Harrison (Jack Alcott) now grappling with his own dark passenger. Meanwhile, Dexter Origins will explore a young Dexter Morgan as he graduates college and becomes a member of the Miami Metro team. We'll meet younger versions of most of the original main characters, including his father, Harry and sister Deb.

While New Blood 2 and Origins are exciting prospects, a third spin-off is in development, and it's by far the most intriguing of them all. According to Deadline, Showtime is exploring a series examining the origins of The Trinity Killer, played by John Lithgow in Dexter's fourth season. For many fans of the original run, season four is the best, thanks in no small part to Lithgow's chilling performance as Arthur Mitchell, aka The Trinity Killer.

Dexter finally met his match with Arthur, and the reproductions of their cat-and-mouse game would forever change Dexter's life. For me, the show was on the decline after season 4, when original showrunner Clyde Phillips departed the series. As much as I'm a fan of Dexter, the latter four seasons were nowhere near as compelling as the first four. New Blood tipped the balance towards more good Dexter than bad, so the pressure is on for the wealth of spin-offs on the horizon.
