Since The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010 failed to reinvigorate the franchise, you could have been forgiven for thinking that the fourth visit to Narnia was delayed indefinitely. That’s not the case according to producer Mark Gordon as plans are afoot for a reboot with an adaptation of The Silver Chair.
"We're hoping to be able to make the movie very shortly. We're very excited about it. It's all going to be a brand new franchise. All original. All original characters, different directors, and an entire new team that this is coming from.”
Back in 2005, the doors to Narnia were opened for a new generation with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The movie version of C.S Lewis’ beloved creation roared its was to a global haul of more than $745 million, a strong start to a promising franchise and a sequel was swiftly put into production. However, moving from the festive release that served its predecessor so well, Prince Caspian arrived in cinemas May 2008 to mixed reviews and a final tally of $419 million. The bloated budget of $225 million left little in the way of profits and Disney parted ways with the property.
Walden Media found a new home in 20th Century Fox for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, keeping a tighter grip on the purse strings brought the sequel in cheaper ($155 million), but the movie didn’t fare any better than Prince Caspian at the box office. After Walden Media lost the rights to Narnia in 2011, it took more than two years for The C.S. Lewis Company to strike a deal with Mark Gordon’s production outfit to produce The Silver Chair. We will have to wait and see how long “very shortly” turns out to be as it has taken almost three years to get this update.
