Netflix is adapting the educational adventures of Carmen Sandiego into an animated series with Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) voicing the titular heroine.

According to Netflix, the new series will see Carmen Sandiego "back and ready for a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue. This fresh take presents an intimate look into Carmen’s past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego and WHY she became a super thief.”

Carmen Sandiego burst onto the scene back in 1985 with a series of educational themed computer games. Proving to be an instant hit with children, Carme Sandiego's popularity grew in the years that followed with a variety of different interactive platforms. An animated series titled Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego launched in 1994 and ran for four seasons with Rita Moreno voicing Carmen. Since then Carmen has remained a fixture in the educational world, but this will be the first animated series in over twenty years.

Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard will be amongst the cast to voice Player, who is not only one of Carmen's closest friend, but he's also her chief accomplice. The first season will consist of twenty 22 minute episodes with Duane Capizzi (The Batman, Transformers Prime) serving as showrunner. Carmen Sandiego is joining the growing library of animated original shows from Netflix aimed at younger audiences.

Last year, thirteen animated offerings were released including Kong: King of the Apes and Guillermo del Toro's rather splendid Trollhunters. Next month Netflix launches a spin-off from the 2002 movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Spirit: Riding Free is available to stream on May 5.

All twenty season one episodes of Carmen Sandiego will be on Netflix early 2019.
