Hot off the heels of announcing Will Smith might be back in the mix for Independence Day 2, director Roland Emmerich now plans to reboot his other sci-fi blockbuster Stargate in a new trilogy of movies.

Released back in 1994 the original film starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, although a hit at the box office no sequel was ever made but the franchise lived on spawning three successful TV shows. Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks assumed the roles of Captain Jack O’Neil and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively in ten seasons of Stargate and made appearances in both the spin-offs Atlantis and Universe.

In an interview with Digital Spy Roland Emmerich discussed his plans to revive the big screen franchise; "We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot... and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon we'll have to look for a writer and start."

As Roland Emmerich’s next project is the Independence Day follow up any plans to travel through the Stargate will have to wait until 2015 at the earliest, unless of course he’s planning to just producing the movie and pass the directing onto somebody else. The new movie will serve as a complete reboot and no characters from the TV shows are expected to appear. Recently Stargate actor James Spader was added to the cast of Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel, Spader will play the main villain Ultron in the movie which begins filming in London early next year.
