August is close to ending, which means fall will be arriving soon (I apologize if I spoiled the seasons for you). For television, this means that everyone’s favourite shows will be coming back shortly (although, summer television has become just as good), while for film, this means that Oscar season is starting. To my knowledge, there hasn’t been an Oscar contender released yet, but Todd Haynes’ Carol, set for release on November 20th, is a probable bet to become a contender.

  • Clint Eastwood’s next film, Sully, will be about Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, the man who successfully landed a malfunctioning plane in New York’s Hudson River back in 2009. It was just announced that the film added Laura Linney to the cast. The film’s cast already includes Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart. Expect the film to have Eastwood’s typical criticism of supposed American heroism. Source: Empire Online
  • Another Period, the show created-by and starring comedians, Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome, about two wannabe Karadashian sisters set in 1902 Rhode Island, has just been picked up for a second season. Source: Deadline
  • Alien 5 is in the works, but it won’t begin filming until after Prometheus 2, at the behest of Ridley Scott. Prometheus 2 is set to begin filming early next year for a 2017 release, while Alien 5 would be set to film in 2017 for release in 2018. Source: Empire Online
  • The television show, Ash vs. Evil Dead, is set to debut on Starz on Halloween night. The latest poster has just been released. Source: Empire Online
  • Jon Stewart, now a few weeks into his post-Daily Show career, will be hosting WWE’s Summerslam this Sunday. Earlier this year, Stewart was in a feud with WWE Superstar (and current Heavyweight champion), Seth Rollins, which led to Rollins appearing on Stewart’s show. This Sunday’s show has expanded to four hours, and the probable Main Event will be Undertaker facing off against Brock Lesnar in a Wrestlemania XXX rematch. Source: Deadline
  • The first trailer for Victor Frankenstein, yet another adaptation of the classic novel, has been released. The film stars James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, and with a script penned by Max Landis, so there is some small hope that this film will not be a boring retread. Source: Box Office Buz
  • On a recent WTF With Marc Maron interview, Jason Bateman admits that nobody wanted a Horrible Bosses 2 sequel. As someone who suffered through HB2, I am glad that there will be no Horrible Bosses 3 (fool me once…). Source: Indiewire
  • Straight Outta Compton has faced criticism for leaving out Dr. Dre assaulting Dee Barnes. However, this scene was included in an earlier version of the script. With its absence from the finished film, Dre appears on film as a saint-like figure, especially when he delivers a finger-wagging monologue in the third act. Source: AV Club
