Fans of Veronica Mars are in for a bumper year as not only is there the fan-funded movie hitting cinemas in March, a spin off digital series is in the works from The CW and will feature characters from the original series.
The cult series ran for 64 episodes from 2004 until its cancellation in 2007, the response to the Kickstarter campaign to raise the money to make the movie version was nothing short of a phenomenon with fans donating over $5 and a half million to see their beloved characters in action again. Creator Rob Thomas will be involved with the spin off which is expected to take the form of eight episodes each running at ten minutes, Kristen Bell will make occasional appearances throughout
There’s no details on when the web series would be filmed but as we’re only a couple of months away from the movie release one would assume that nothing will be done until after that. President of the CW Mark Pedowitz also gave fans some hope towards the future of Veronica Mars returning to TV.
“I have great faith in Rob that he will deliver something fantastic and should it ever turn into a TV series again, hopefully he'll think about us,"
I might risk alienating myself here but I wasn’t a huge fan of the show during its original run, before you start sending me marshmallows in the post to make a point let me just say that it became a show very dear to my heart when I binged watched the lot one weekend in 2010 when I was ill. Sadly my retrospective appreciation for the series didn’t save it from cancellation but thankfully Rob Thomas didn’t give up on bringing it back as getting a bonafide fourth season is now looking very healthy.
