The success of Pitch Perfect 2 practically guaranteed a sequel with a storming performance at the worldwide box office. Universal have now made it official, Anna Kendrick and Rebel will be back in their respective roles for Pitch Perfect 3. The comedy sequel will sing and dance its way into cinemas on July 21, 2017 with production due to start early next year.
There had been a healthy amount of debate in recent weeks of the ongoing participation of Kendrick and Wilson; their sequel obligations were fulfilled with part two, so the duo have renegotiated new deals. Wilson had previously voiced her desire to return as Fat Amy in a third movie; the actress has also hinted that her very own spin-off could be in the works later down the line.
No further casting announcements were made, but we should expect a full line-up of the main cast for the next chapter. Pitch Perfect 2 writer Kay Cannon is reportedly returning to draft the sequel, although it remains unclear if Elizabeth Banks will resume directing duties.
Actress Elizabeth Banks made her directorial debut with the hit sequel having produced and co-starred in the original. Bank will be back as a producer and possible co-star, but since Pitch Perfect 2 opened big Banks has been in high demand for directing projects. Universal have already begun talks with Banks to take on an adaptation of Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen book series. The fantasy project is the first part of a planned trilogy that will likely have a two-part finale the way all young adult adaptations tend to.
Pitch Perfect 2 defied expectations and took more than $69 million in the US on its opening weekend, the sequel has since amassed twice the amount of its predecessor with $260 million and counting worldwide.
