FX's hit anthology series American Horror Story is going to be on our screens for another three seasons, and Ryan Murphy has big plans for the future of series. Late last year, Murphy teased that he was working on a top secret season that would involve characters from the first (Murder House) and the third season (Coven).

Back in October, Ryan Murphy said;

“It’s not going to be next season, but we are going to do a season that’s a crossover between Murder House and Coven together, which is very bizarre."

We've already seen a handful of characters from previous seasons pop up unexpectedly in later iterations. Pepper (Naomi Grossman) from Asylum featured throughout Freak Show, that season also saw another Asylum character appear in the shape of Sister Mary Eunice McKee (Lily Rabe). Sarah Paulson reprised her Murder House role in one episode of the fifth season (Hotel) and Paulson recently stepped back into the shoes of the formidable Lana Winters (Asylum) in last year's Roanoke.

For the most part, the crossovers so far have been minimal (aside from Pepper) and restricted to just one episode. However, based on Murphy's comments during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, this could be a whole season with familiar characters.

"It’s a character from season 1 that will be thrust into the world that you are left with at the end of Coven, which is sort of like the male/female/witch academy. And then all of those characters will intertwine, which is confusing because some of them are from seasons 1 and 3. Like, Sarah Paulson will probably be playing 18 characters."

Naturally, as soon as Murphy mentioned that characters from Murder House and Coven are being revisited my hopes that former AHS star Jessica Lange might return have suddenly skyrocketed. Jessica Lange departed the anthology series after the fourth season (Freak Show), Murphy has remained optimistic that he might be able to tempt her back one day, and as the crossover will be either season eight or nine, there's plenty of time to make this happen.

Before we get too excited about the crossover season, we have the grueling wait to discover the theme of the forthcoming seventh season that returns to FX later this year.

Meanwhile, Jessica Lange stars alongside Susan Sarandon and Sarah Paulson in Ryan Murphy's new FX series Feud. The eight-part biopic tells the story of the legendary feud between Hollywood icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford while they were filming What Ever Happened To Baby Jane. Feud launches in the US on FX March 5.
