As directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette (aka filming collective Radio Silence) are busy with their top-secret Universal Monster movie, the next entry in the Scream franchise has found a more than qualified replacement in the form of Happy Death Day's Christopher Landon.
Landon has come a long way since penning several entries in the Paranormal Activity franchise with high-concept horrors like Happy Death Day and serial killer body-swap gem Freaky. If you've not seen the latter, Vince Vaughn plays a ruthless serial killer who switches bodies with a teenage girl, played by Kathryn Newton, in a serial killer twist on Freaky Friday. Treat yourself and seek it out.
Proving he can make something for a younger audience, his recent Netflix movie We Have A Ghost struck a winning balance of family-friendly supernatural fun; while it might have been a tad overlong, it was a heap of fun. Naturally, returning to full-on horror is very welcome news, and I'm excited to see what Landon will bring to Scream, as his two Happy Death Day movies do a great job of dissecting the slasher genre.
While the most recent Scream enjoyed the biggest opening weekend of the long-running franchise, one noticeable element was missing from the movie: Neve Campbell's appearance as series mainstay Sidney Prescott Campbell revealed last year that she wouldn't be starring in Scream 6 due to a less-than-impressive offer; Radio Silence voiced their hope for Campbell to return to the franchise in a future instalment. Could Scream 7 see the return of its original final girl? If so, will Sidney meet an untimely end at the hands of Ghostface? Given the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, there has yet to be a release date or even an idea of which cast members from previous sequels will be returning, and as there's yet to be a script, it is far too soon to speculate.
Scream VI is out now on Digital, DVD, and Blu-ray.
