Dark Souls. For gamers, it’s like another term for “Game Over”. The mere mention of it can induce painful memories to those who had the unfortunate experience of going through the series’ notorious punishing difficulty. Sleepless nights… Broken controllers… Hairs being pulled out… Profanity-laced outbursts… A montage of gamers going through a Dark Souls game can probably pass as a horror movie. Thankfully, gamers who have mobiles as their chosen gaming platform have been spared from the clutches of the Dark Souls series.
Not anymore.
Bandai Namco and GameStop have joined forces to release a free-to-play mobile game inspired by the Dark Souls series, titled Slashy Souls. The game features an endless runner gameplay instead of the familiar action RPG mechanics. And it’s presented in 16-bit graphics, instead of full 3D. But aside from its dark, gothic look and difficulty, Bandai Namco has stated that it will bear no other similarities. So, no, Slashy Souls is not an official installment in the series. It’s not even developed by From Software, the series’ developers. Although the game will feature some spells, weapons, and bosses from the series, so fans at least have that to look forward to.
It is yet to be seen just how close the difficulty of Slashy Souls is to the Dark Souls games. But the game’s tagline “Why Wait? Die Today!” is probably telling enough. So, those who plan to play the game that have no prior Dark Souls experience should be careful when the frustration kicks in. Since tablets and smartphones aren’t exactly as easily replaceable as real controllers.
For fans of the series, Slashy Souls provides a temporary entertainment while waiting for Dark Souls III to bring on the real challenge. Slashy Souls is now available at iTunes and Google Play; Dark Souls III will be released worldwide on April 12, 2016 for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
