The credits had barely begun to roll on the premiere broadcast of Sharknado 3 on SyFy before the network announced their plans for a fourth instalment. That’s right folks, Sharknado 4 is happening and the fans are getting a say in what happens to one of the main characters.

If you don’t want to have the ending of Sharknado 3 spoilt for you (if such a thing is possible), then avert your eyes now. The close of the movie left the fate of April (Tara Reid) hanging in the balance, now SyFy wants the fans to decide if she lives or dies. You can help make that choice by voting #AprilLives or #AprilDies if Twitter isn’t your thing, head on over to the Syfy website.

Tara Reid thinks the fan input element is the next evolution of the Sharknado saga;

"I think that's going to be a big turning point for the franchise. It gives it some excitement, and it's giving the fans a chance to interact. No matter what happens, I'm proud to be a part of this phenomenon."

Regardless of what you make think of the movies overall, you have to admire how SyFy have marketed this franchise over each instalment. The social media buzz that Sharknado creates rivals that of any big studio blockbuster, even if some of the chatter is negative it all adds to the awareness. The third entry even went to the lengths of adding the subtitle ‘Oh Hell No’ to fully lean into the ridiculousness.

Director Anthony C. Ferrante has previously hinted that he would like to take Sharknado to Europe, but from the sound of his recent comments the next sequel will remain US set.

“I want to do international. There are still U.S. cities that I want to destroy. But it’s less about the cities, and it’s more about, what are we going to do with Ian and Tara, and what genres do we want to play with?”

Sharknado 4 will debut on SyFy next year with Ian Ziering, and David Hasselhoff confirmed to return.
