James Wan directs this horror starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. When the Perron family experience strange goings-on at their farmhouse, they enlist the help of paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine. As they investigate, however, the couple begin to realise that, despite their expertise, they may not be equipped to deal with such a violent and foreboding evil...
Touch me in the bad place without my permission, give me bad memories to make the scary film go away. The Conjuring has to be THE scariest film of 2014 and it’s all thanks to James Wan and his unique talent as director to bring old school techniques into the modern day.
The Conjuring is set in the 1970’s as one family finds themselves subject to a truly malevolent spirit. James Wan as director not only captures the time, he gets his cast to embody that period as well. The wholesome American family meets its match and audiences are about to bear witness to the real reason why watching horror is a complete work out.
During this films run time, you will clench until your sphincter fuses shut and your breath in so violently that you may crack a rib! The Conjuring is an experience like no other this year and its quite remarkable because there was only one trailer released that really did it justice.
The trailers that came after that original chilling trailer all focussed on Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson), these characters are iconic in the world of paranormal investigation and the sudden switch from scares to characters made me concerned for the future of The Conjuring but I’m pleased to say that thanks to input from the REAL Lorraine Warren, the characters in this film and the story are exceptionally well rounded.
The Conjuring could be the start of something wonderful for two out of this world paranormal investigators leading the way, both Farmiga and Wilson portray the couple with such style and grace that you can’t help but want to see more of what this couple have to offer and the stories they have to tell.
That’s not to say they steal the show, the remarkably under rated Lili Taylor stars as the mother who fears for her families safety to the point where she seeks out the Warren’s as a last resort! Her portrayal as a matriarch under attack gives this paranormal story roots in the real world and it really does make for an interesting watch as a result.
The Conjuring isn’t a horror, it’s a tale of suspense likened back to the old haunted house classics that relied only on what you didn’t see to spook the audience. Whilst The Conjuring relies on the obvious and the creeping suspicion that you’re not alone, the mixture of old and new makes for a truly terrifying experience resulting in a sore butt, a weakened heart and a need to sleep with the lights ON!
Thanks James Wan, my electricity bills are gonna be through the roof this winter!
The Blu-ray here looks unbelievable. Usually with films like this and of this time period, I expect my image to be roughed up a little in post production to make things a little more "of the era", in The Conjuring, the clarity and the depth adds to the sink into your seat until it breaks syndrome that will affect you throughout the films running time.
The audio is just as clear as the image on screen, from the pounding of slamming doors and footsteps running up stairs, right through to the innocent claps used to scare Lili Taylor to the point of tears!
It's an exceptional blu-ray and you can buy it today!! DO IT!!!
