ABC are giving The Goldbergs the spin-off treatment with an as yet untitled 90s set series from creator Adam F Goldberg.
The new series will see The Goldbergs regular Bryan Callen reprise his role as overzealous gym teacher Rick Mellor who will serve as one of the main characters. According to Deadline, the series will centre on "two high school teachers, including Callen’s coach Mr. Mellor, who become unlikely father figures to the school secretary’s three misfit kids."
Ever since How I Met Your Mother ruined itself with THAT bitterly underwhelming finale, I've been searching for a likable US sitcom to fill the void. Thanks to constant reruns on E4; I have found that show and have fallen for the charms of The Goldbergs that's loaded with all the 80s nostalgia you could ever want.
In recent years, spin-offs have been largely restricted to CSI, Law and Order and NCIS, but the spin-off is currently enjoying a renaissance across the major networks. NBC already has The Blacklist: Redemption on the way and are working on a prequel to The Big Bang Theory featuring a 12-year-old Sheldon Cooper. CBS are launching their spin-off from The Good Wife (The Good Fight) early next year with Christine Baranski reprising her role as Diane Lockhart. Add to that the returning Better Call Saul plus Fear The Walking Dead and 2017 is going to be jam-packed with spin-offs.
It's worth mentioning that not every planned spin-off actually materialises into a full series. Modern Family, The Office (US) and How I Met Your Mother had spin-offs that looked like a sure thing, but none of them got passed the pilot process. It remains unclear if any of the cast from The Goldbergs will be dropping by for a guest spot, but I sure do hope Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly) pops by to continue making Coach Mellor's life a living hell.
