Marvel's The Inhumans is coming to ABC for an eight-episode event series that is expected to launch late 2017. A special version of the first two episodes will be shown exclusively in IMAX cinemas for two weeks over the summer ahead of its September debut on ABC.
In case you were wondering how a TV series could even hope to hold up on IMAX (Game of Thrones managed it and then some), The Inhumans will be entirely shot on IMAX digital cameras. Not only will The Inhumans be the first ever TV show filmed in IMAX, but it's also the first time that IMAX are co-funding a television series.
“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic. It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.” - IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond
Back in 2014, Marvel revealed their Phase Three lineup of movies and The Inhumans was all set to hit cinemas in 2019. However, since that announcement Marvel struck a deal with Sony to reboot Spider-Man, greenlit a sequel to Ant-Man and moved Captain Marvel up leaving no room for The Inhumans in an already jam-packed Phase Three.
While you might have thought the obvious move was to bump The Inhumans to Phase Four, Marvel decided to remove the movie from its release schedule with no firm plans to set a new date.
Marvel has already spent more than two seasons exploring The Inhumans mythology on SHIELD with varying levels of success. While Marvel hasn't confirmed much in the way of details, it's a safe bet that the new Inhumans will be completely separate from those seen in SHIELD. According to Marvel, The Inhumans "will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family." So, if you're not already familiar with the character, now's the time to invest in some comic books, or Google it.
