The fourth Transformers movie is on track for the biggest US opening of the franchise, following a huge start on Friday with an estimated $41.6 million Age Of Extinction is on track for a $100 million weekend.

In keeping with the tradition of the previous entries the critical response to the fourth round of Rock ‘Em Sock Em’ Robots has been mixed to say the least. By now we should all know what to expect from a Transformers movie, big explosions, questionable acting, bum numbing running times and Michael Bay. If you like your blockbusters to be intelligent or at least coherent then Transformers is not the franchise for you, but that hasn’t stopped the film series from making giant sums of money. Speaking to MTV’s Josh Horowitz, director Michael Bay no longer seems phased by the ongoing negativity.

“They love to hate and I don’t care; let them hate. They’re still going to see the movie! I think it’s good to get a little tension. Very good. “I used to get bothered by it, but I think it’s good to get the dialogue going. It makes me think, and it keeps me on my toes, so it’s good.”

On that front Bay has a point as it seems the worse the reviews are for a Transformers movie the higher the box office total becomes. Age Of Extinction also earned an estimated $30 million in China setting a new record, as well as taking first place in Australia, Russia and South Korea.

Transformers Age Of Extinction is released in the UK on July 5th and you can read our official verdict right here.
