Dreamworks Animation will be spreading some more sunshine from their pocket and dance, dance, dance, by setting April 10, 2020, as the official release date for a sequel to their hit movie Trolls.
While far from recapturing the success of previous Dreamworks blockbusters like Shrek, Trolls pulled in a respectable $340 million worldwide and Dreamworks Animation's new owners (Universal) are keen to build a new franchise. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake will be back to voice their respective roles, and Timberlake is expected to provide another upbeat super feel good soundtrack. Who would have thought that a member of N-Sync would go on to write and perform an Academy Award nominated song.
The current owners (20th Century Fox) still have two completed Dreamworks movies to release under the terms of their contract. The first has the dulcet tones of Alec Baldwin voicing the titular character in The Boss Boss (March 31st), and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie swoops into cinemas later in the summer.
The first DWA title under NBCUniversal will be next year's musical extravaganza, Larkins. Co-directed by Tim Minchin, the movie features the voices of Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Margot Robbie. Part of Universal's grand plan to turn things around at Dreamworks include reviving the Shrek franchise for multiple sequels and spin-offs.
After a couple of box office bombs, Dreamworks Animation lost its long held position as the second biggest animated movie studio in Hollywood. Second place now belongs to Illumination thanks to their quadruple whammy of Desiciple Me 2, Minion, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. It should as no surprise that there are sequels to all four movies on the way, the first arrives this summer when Gru and his minions return in Despicable Me 3.
Trolls is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
