Ubisoft Won’t Release New Assassin’s Creed This Year

Earlier this year, there have been rumblings that Ubisoft won’t be releasing a new main Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. The alleged reason for the decision was for the studio to re-assess their acclaimed franchise and give it an overhaul.

Now, consider that rumor to be a slice from the truth pie.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated that there indeed won’t be a new Assassin’s Creed game this year. The decision was for the studio to re-evaluate the franchise in order to continue to provide memorable gameplay experiences. Although they are sitting this year, it does not necessarily mean that the franchise will completely abandon its annual release schedule and that “the company will evaluate the release schedules for every new game on an individual basis”, according to Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez.

There is one part of the earlier rumor that hasn’t been confirmed, though: the title and setting of the next main Assassin’s Creed installment. Allegedly, the next game will be set in Egypt and titled Assassin’s Creed Empire.

Ubisoft’s effort to hold back on annually shoving half-hearted annual titles in fans’ faces may be a good thing, considering how Activision successfully pulled off a similar strategy with its equally acclaimed Call of Duty franchise. Activision laid out a rotation that will ensure each annual release will have a full three-year development cycle, with each game being handled by a different developer. The strategy has paid off handsomely for the studio, as evidenced by last year’s success of Call of Duty: Black Ops III. So, Ubisoft’s may be making a wise decision here for giving more time to develop the next main game.

Another possible reason Ubisoft hit the brake is to allow the first live-action film adaptation to hog the entire spotlight for the year. The Assassin’s Creed film, which stars Michael Fassbender, is set to be released on December 21, 2016. The Assassin’s Creed franchise isn’t exactly Star Wars in the entertainment industry, so they don’t need any more distractions that can possibly affect the film’s marketing.
