Universal have had a pretty good year at the box office with mega-hits Despicable Me 2 and Fast and Furious 6 helping to make 2013 their best ever year (just don’t mention RIPD). Two of their future tentpole projects have had an update which sees one movie fix a release date and the other getting the heck out of the way of Star Wars Episode VII

The reboot of The Mummy franchise has been in development since plans were abandoned for a fourth entry with Brendan Fraser, last week Mamma director Andres Muschietti was reported to be in talks to replace Len Wiseman. The reboot will be a darker take on the jovial adventuring of Stephen Sommers spirited movies and will be leaning more towards horror. Muschietti is currently working on Bird Box for Universal but they might delay to ensure The Mummy is his next project.

Duncan Jones landed the job of directing Warcraft (based on World of Warcraft incase you didn’t know) which for only his third film is a pretty impressive feat. Originally earmarked for a December 18 2015 release the full force of the Star Wars effect has caused Universal to gently push Warcraft to March 2016 just to be on the safe side. The festive film schedule is already bursting at the seams with potential blockbusters, a fifth Mission Impossible (which by now should be called Mission Possible), Kung Fu Panda 3 and possibly Ron Howard’s third Dan Brown adaption, Inferno.
