Some good news for Star Wars fans as Walt Disney announced it will release the eighth instalment on May 26, 2017. The media giant also announced that the first Star Wars standalone film will be called Rogue One and is slated to release in December 2016.
Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is directing the Rogue One and the movie will star the Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones. Chris Weitz (Cinderella and About a Boy) will write the screenplay for the Rogue One. Looper writer/director Rian Johnson is directing and writing the Episode VIII. Johnson is one of the most talented directors around. He has worked on three episodes of the superb TV series Breaking Bad.
The eighth instalment will pick up where JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens leaves off. For the conscientious fans, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will release forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Ram Bergman and Kathleen Kennedy (the producers for Looper) will also produce this instalment and JJ Abrams will serve as the executive producer.
The news of Johnson’s involvement is not exactly new. The news first broke in 2014 but it’s only now at Walt Disney’s recent shareholders’ meeting that the news was confirmed. Also, Force Awakens, directed by JJ Abrams features the original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as also, newcomers Adam Driver and John Boyega. The movie takes place 30 years after 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
It seems Disney is now banking heavily on the Star Wars franchise after it acquired Lucas Films in the 2012 for a sum of $4 billion. Walt Disney is also planning Star Wars-themed attractions at Disney parks across the globe. With Frozen instalment and two Star Wars movies lined up this year, it’s going to be a very eventful year for Walt Disney.
