A few days ago, news broke that Disney+ were not moving forward with a second season of Willow. Serving as a belated sequel to the cult classic movie directed by Ron Howard, the return of Willow was a solid fantasy adventure that seemingly set up the next chapter of the story during the season one finale. Warwick Davis returned to his beloved role as Willow and we were introduced to the next generation of heroes.
However, series creator John Kasden took to Twitter in a lengthy post to clear up the misconceptions surrounding the series' future. You can read the full statement here, but it appears as though the word cancelled is inaccurate, and hiatus might be a fairer description.
"A decision was made last week to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year. With all the TV and movies in production around the world, it feels unfair to limit an actor's availability without a clear sense of when you're going to need them again. It's further triviliased by the simple reality that the scripts we've been working on require just as many actors with whom no such contractual hold exists."
It's common for TV shows to have long gaps between seasons, but releasing cast members from their contracts for an ongoing series is a little less standard practice. Kasden goes on to say that filming the second season wouldn't happen for at least a year, and as it took 34 years for a follow-up to Willow to arrive, it might take a little time for the next chapter to materialise. Disney isn't likely to completely abandon a well know IP, and the series was by no means a failure. The first season was an expensive series, and Disney is currently trying to save more than $5 billion in operating costs with heavy cuts on their Disney+ shows.
We've already seen all the Marvel shows for this year change their release dates to an unspecified later point. Secret Invasion starring Samuel L Jackson, was tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of this year, and season 2 of Loki was set for the summer; at the time of writing, it remains unclear when they'll launch on Disney+.
