A Star Is Born is a musical romantic drama film produced and directed by Bradley Cooper (in his directorial debut) and written by Eric Roth, Cooper and Will Fetters. It is the fourth remake of the 1937 film of the same name and stars Cooper, Lady Gaga, Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle, and Sam Elliott.
The Story/The Direction:
This film is about a hard-drinking musician (Cooper) who wanders into a bar and discovers a young singer (Gaga). He brings her on tour with him and eventually they fall in love. She ends up becoming a star but their relationship is tested numerous times. She grows as an artist but his alcohol addiction starts to push them apart and he has issues with where her career goes. Their relationship is the heart of this film.
This being Cooper's first directional film shows how far he has grown in Hollywood. He went from asking Sean Penn a question on Behind the Actor's Studio to being a supporting role in comedies then starring roles and now direction. He is able to capture this relationship between the himself and Gaga extremely well for the entirety of the film. Furthermore, he is able to give a relatively unique and authentic story because he uses a very good singer as his starlet. He also worked with the son of Willie Nelson on the music to give the film more authenticity to the type of music. Even if a viewer not a country music fan, they can still feel the authenticity in the songs. This is definitely helped by the performance of Gaga.
Cooper's character is a drunkard and Gaga's Ally is an innocent woman who only wants to sing in front of a crowd. He is able to make her dream come true but that comes with a sacrifice. He must accept that his time in the spotlight is coming to an end. This pushes him more to drink which hurts their relationship. Gaga is mostly known for her Pop albums but there are a few that show her singing ability especially the one with Tony Bennett. Gaga herself started off in a Jazz bar and her story is similar to that of Ally. While it may not be 100% exact, this adds another level of authenticity to the film. She is able to sing immensely well on all the songs and each moment where she shows emotion, she knocks it out of the park. Cooper is also great but he is somewhat outshined by Gaga and also Elliott. Elliott is not on screen very much but he is able to maximize his time. He plays Cooper's brother and he sees character fall further into misery and it pains him.
One of the main flaws with this film is that it feels rushed at times. There is a lot of jumping months at a time and it can take the viewer out of the experience a little. This film also can be daunting to rewatch because if a viewer only enjoys the music part of the film, they do not have to watch the entire thing.
This film has a lot of great attributes. It has a great cast, awesome direction, and fantastic music. All of which put together results in a very authentic film. There's a lot of passion in this story and it shows through Cooper, Gaga, and Elliott. The flaws do make it hard to rewatch but one cannot deny the skill in making this film.
