Aquaman is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) following Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. It was directed by James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall. It stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman.
The Story/The Direction:
Aquaman/Arthur Curry (Mamoa) is the son of a human man (Morrison) and an Atlantian Queen (Kidman). He is the rightful aire to throne but he would rather remain with the humans. After his half brother Orm (Wilson), tries to unite the underwater kingdoms to take over the humans, Mera (Heard) seeks out Aquaman to fjght Orm anf reclaim his birth right.
Wan takes the audience into this beautiful underwater world. He uses his horror film experience to create a very unique world filled with a bounty of creatures and colors. He is supported by Rupert Gregson-Williams and his score. Their technique make the world amazing to visit again and again. Wan produces some wonderful shots of color and unique places that the characters journey on. The action sequences are a lot fun as are the costumes and visual effects.
Mamoa as Aquaman is the best part of the film as he ia able to make this mostly made fun of superhero, cool again. His charisma and chemistry with Heard make their journey fun. The two villians are pretty great as well and are quite intimidating.
This film honestly is very clichê as a lot of dialogue cam be predicted as well as the plot. The film does drag at times and not much screentime is given to the backstory of Aquaman. There are a few scenes however they are not shown more than once even though they are used as plot devices.
Even though this film is predicable and cliche, it is a lot of fun. Each moment looks fantastic and the entire film feels skmolar to a Saturday morning cartoon. Its a definite step up from other DCEU films and this good amd enjoyable film makes Atlantis worth journeying to again amd again om Blu-ray.
