The Death of Superman is an animated superhero film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment and is based on the DC comic book storyline of the same name. It is the 32nd installment in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies and the 11th film in the DC Animated Movie Universe. The film stars the voices of Jerry O'Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Rainn Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Nathan Fillion, Christopher Gorham, Matt Lanter, Shemar Moore, Jason O'Mara, Rocky Carroll, and Patrick Fabian.

The Story/The Direction:

The film covers the battle between Superman (O'Connell) and Doomsday along with him trying to balance his superhero duties and his romantic life with Lois Lane (Romijn).  This film follows pretty close to the source material where Doomsday is defeating everyone in his path. Superman is the only one who can stop him and the viewers will feel for him as this film has some really great writing. The writer, Peter J. Tomasi, is a comic book writer so he knows the characters very well. Furthermore, the writing helps the film set up the next film flawlessly. It makes the tie-ins part of the story instead of easter eggs.  The animation, especially when the ultimate fight occurs, looks fantastic. These action scenes have a lot of weight because of how much they have built up the Superman character.

The Characters:

The Superman character is looked at in a similar way to how Batman was analyzed in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The films look at their human counterparts and try to show who they are outside of the spandex costumes. Another thing this film does well is the way it humanizes the superheroes. In one particular scene, certain heroes are not able to always be at Justice League meetings because of their human lives. One is getting married and another has a kid to look after.  Superman sees this and tries to understand the balance of being a superhero and having a life. Lois does not know that Superman and Clark are one in the same and he is debating on whether he should tell her. Their relationship is the cornerstone of this film and keeps watchers captivated by Clark and not Superman. Superman has vulnerabilities and insecurities similar to that of a normal human being. This makes the ultimate event even more powerful when it is shown on screen.

The Flaws:

The film really simplifies the Doomsday character to a monster who is coming to destroy everything. One line is given to his backstory that is fairly lacking in comparison to his comic book counterpart. While this is a film that is supposed to focus on Superman/Clark and not the villain, this can take a little away from the ultimate fight as one side is developed and the other is not. Furthermore, the casting of Wilson as Lex Luther seemed a little off not so much to destroy the character but enough to notice.

This film is definitely better than the animated Superman: Doomsday and also the last thirty minutes of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice This film has probably the best outing of the superhero even if not the first adaptation of the source material. Even though this film is not the complete story, there is a complete story within the film that makes any viewer excited about the upcoming sequel, Reign of the Supermen. This great film is definitely worth checking out.
