Reign of the Supermen is an animated superhero film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment and is a direct sequel to the 2018 animated film The Death of Superman, based on the comic book of the same name. It is the 13th film in the DC Animated Movie Universe and the 33rd film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies. It was directed by Sam Liu and written by Tim Sheridan and Jim Krieg. It stars the voices of Jerry O'Connell, Rebecca Romjin, Rainn Wilson, Cress Williams, Patrick Fabian, Cameron Monaghan, Jason O'Mara, Khary Payton, Charles Halford, and Rosario Dawson.
The Story/The Direction:
This film takes place six months after the previous film and there are now four different entities all stating that they are Superman: Cyborg Superman (O'Connell), Superboy (Monaghan), The Eradicator (Halford), and Steel (Williams). Each has their reasons to try to replace Superman but the world including Superman's old girlfriend, Lois Lane (Romjin), does not know which to trust. For the most part, the story stays faithful to the source material and Liu produces a very entertaining film. The animation is immensely superior to the prior film and when the action occurs, it looks fantastic. The music adds to this as well as it makes the scenes intense and suspenseful.
The voice acting of both O'Connell and Romjin as their characters are both fantastic and should continue as the characters in the following films in the DC Animated Movie Universe. Romjin is definitely the stand out as her Lois goes through a lot over the course of the film and the film uses her to guide the story. Wilson as Lex Luthor has definitely improved since the prior film and makes the character his own. His Lex feels a lot more menacing and the audience does not know what he is up to.
The main issue with this film is that it has many characters to deal with. This makes some of the characters feel underused such as the Eradicator, Steel, and Superboy. Furthermore, there is not really a hero or heroine to follow throughout the story as the main one, Superman, is dead. In addition, the audience also does not get the effect of his death and what life was like without him. It does not feel that six months have passed and it feels that it happened less than a week ago. The comedy parts do not always work and how the film sets up future films takes away from the overall impact of Superman's death.
This film is very enjoyable even with its flaws and is worth adding to the collection. O'Connell and Romjin area great in their roles and the animation looks great. While it is a bit of a let down in comparison to the previous film, one can find a lot of fun in this great film.
