Fan favourite Alex Kingston will be back as Professor River Song in this year’s annual Doctor Who festive special. The as yet untitled episode will mark the first time that River Song has encountered Peter Capaldi’s incarnation of The Doctor. Speaking to BBC News, Kingston was thrilled to be coming back to the play in the TARDIS again.
“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through; we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”
We last saw River Song in The Name of the Doctor back in 2013, while many fans felt that he story had come full circle, the door was always left open for her to return. As expected showrunner Steven Moffat wasn’t giving any details away on the how River returns to the fold.
“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”
Steven Moffat has been less keen than previous showrunner Russell T Davies about bringing characters back into the show. Even though Moffat wrote the two-part episode that introduced Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), the character has not made an appearance during Moffat’s era.
The ninth series of the rebooted Doctor Who kicks off on BBC One Saturday, September 19th.
